Officials and state media said on Monday that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who was viewed as a hardliner and a possible successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had perished in a helicopter crash near the mountainous area close to the border with Azerbaijan.
After a nighttime search in blizzard circumstances, the charred wreckage of the helicopter carrying Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Raisi was discovered on Monday morning. The chopper crashed on Sunday.
